Meet Peg Lacy, SMM Music Ministry Director

Meet Peg Lacy, SMM Music Ministry Director

This post marks the beginning of a bimonthly column featuring SMM staff members. We hope to provide readers with the opportunity to become better acquainted with our employees.

The series begins with Peg Lacy, Music Ministry Director, who has the longest length of service.  Peg has worked  at SMM for 28 years. Her position involves planning the music and organizing musicians for a wide variety of parish liturgies (i.e. weekend masses, funerals, weddings, holidays, sacraments).  She came to the parish when the former music director retired and recommended her to Fr. Dunne.  She has worked under 4 pastors and 24 associate pastors all of whom were unique and “holy priests.”

Peg is the middle child of nine and was raised in Fremont’s St. Patrick’s Parish. She grew up on a farm that has been in the family since 1869 when her Irish grandfather bought it from the UP Railroad.  She has been married to her husband, Dan, for 33 years. Their family includes daughter Carrie, son Dan and granddaughter Emily.

One of her favorite SMM memories was the time the congregation stood to sing the Celtic Alleluia and raised the roof. At the end, the young son of the cantor clapped his hands and yelled, “Yeah Daddy!” She loved the year there were 96 children in the Children’s Choir.  She has distinct recollections of special gatherings held over the years including cancer healing services, Lessons and Carols during  Advent and a Mass on the evening of 9 11.

In her free time, Peg likes to read, garden, go on walks and research family history.  If she had chosen a different career she would have become either a high school religion teacher, a professional genealogist or have written “catchy” TV theme songs.

Peg’s bucket list includes taking a sabbatical to work with village churches in Ireland to build up moral and boost their music ministry.

Peg noted that in one of the gospels, Jesus is up on a mountain with some of the apostles.  They tell him, “Lord it is good to be here.”  She said she often has the same sentiment when pulling into the SMM parking….it is good to be here.

SMM is blessed to have the gifted and talented Peg Lacy as our Music Ministry Director!
